Bokmål and Nynorsk are just two different ways of writing it, two different standards. Bokmål is quite similar to the way people speak in the Oslo region. Nynorsk, on the other hand, usually only appears in writing. People who use Nynorsk in general speak in their own dialect. Bokmål is the most common written language, while Nynorsk is a written language assembled from various dialects (mostly from the west coast), by a man called Ivar Aasen. The reason it was assembled was to distance the Norwegian language from the Danish one after Norway broke free from Denmark’s rule in 1814.
