2021-01-30 · The cause of external resorption is sometimes unclear, but there are many situations that can cause a tooth's root to dissolve. Pressure from another tooth or orthodontic materials, for example, can cause trauma to the outside of the tooth, which is sometimes seen in children who have impacted wisdom teeth that are putting pressure on an emerging tooth. Tooth resorption can cause a number of complications, including: infections crooked teeth tooth weakness and discoloration chipped teeth cavity-like holes loss of teeth recession of roots pain One of these is external resorption after trauma. In such cases, resorption is caused by inflammation in the pulp and/or in the periodontal tissue. Permanent tooth roots can also be affected by resorption caused by pressure in the periodontal ligament, seen for example, in connection with tooth eruption, orthodontic tooth movement or tumors. External Root Resorption is similar to internal root resorption but the resorption occurs from the outside and goes inwards. Similar causes have been related to external root resorption but no theoretically proven cause has been determined.
